Act 3

Scene I-

SCENE I. A public place.

Enter MERCUTIO, BENVOLIO, Page, and Servants

BENVOLIO

Mercutio, let’s go home!

I’m tired, and if we run into the Capulets

They’re gonna want to fight.

MERCUTIO

Benvolio, you’re one of those guys who never wants to fight

but once you get drunk, you’ll fight anyone.

BENVOLIO

Am I really like that?

MERCUTIO

Yeah you are!

When anyone does something really small to

make you angry, you get angry about it.

When you want to get angry, you find something

to get angry about!

BENVOLIO

So what?

MERCUTIO

You always find someone to fight with

and you always want to fight with them for the

stupidest reasons! Now you want to teach me

about restraining myself?

BENVOLIO

Uh-oh, here come the Capulets.

MERCUTIO

Who cares?

Enter TYBALT and others

TYBALT

(at followers) Come with me, I’m going to talk to them.

(to Montagues) Hey, could I

talk with one of you?

MERCUTIO

Oh, you want to talk to us?

What about?

TYBALT

You hang out with Romeo, don’t you?

MERCUTIO

Hang out? Yes we hang out, do you have

a problem with that?

BENVOLIO

You guys shouldn’t be having this talk in public.

There are too many people watching.

MERCUTIO

Who cares if these people see it,

that doesn’t bother me at all.

Enter ROMEO

TYBALT

Well never mind now, here comes the person I was waiting for.

(At Romeo) I hate you Romeo.

ROMEO

Tybalt, I have to love you.

We don’t have to fight!

TYBALT

Yes we do!

You have hurt me before so now fight me back!

ROMEO

I have never hurt you!

And I do not intend to do so now.

MERCUTIO

If you won’t fight him Romeo, I will.

Tybalt, defend yourself!

Mercutio puts up his fists

TYBALT

I won’t fight you! You’re not worth it.

MERCUTIO

Ha! Look Romeo, he’s scared to fight me!

He’s not man enough!

He’s not even man enough to fight a little girl.

TYBALT

Fine then, you want some of this, come get some!

I’ll show you whose man enough, you bastard!

Tybalt pulls out a knife

ROMEO

Mercutio, don’t fight.

MERCUTIO

(to Tybalt) Gimme’ your best shot.

They fight

ROMEO

Benvolio, help me break them up!

TYBALT stabs MERCUTIO under ROMEO’s arm, MERCUTIO falls, TYBALT runs

MERCUTIO

He stabbed me!

BENVOLIO

Are you really hurt?

MERCUTIO

I’ll be ok, it’s just a little scratch.

ROMEO

You’ll be fine, it can’t hurt that bad.

MERCUTIO

It’s not that bad, but it will be enough.

Call me tomorrow and you should find me a grave man.

Why did you have to step in?

He stabbed me under your arm!

ROMEO

I just wanted you to stop fighting

MERCUTIO

Benvolio, help me to a bed were I can rest.

(at Romeo) A plague on both your schools!

Exeunt MERCUTIO and BENVOLIO

ROMEO

Why did Mercutio, relative of the Prince,

Have to die saving me from Tybalt, who has only been my cousin for an hour?

Why did Juliet’s beauty turn me into a wuss, when before I was strong?

Re-enter BENVOLIO

BENVOLIO

Romeo, Mercutio has died!

ROMEO

This is the beginning of bad things to come.

BENVOLIO

Look, Tybalt is coming back.

ROMEO

After what he did to Mercutio, he think he can come back?

Re-enter TYBALT

Tybalt, Mercutio’s soul is floating right above our heads

And either you, I, or both will join him

TYBALT

Well then it looks like it’s going to be you.

ROMEO

We shall see.

They fist fight, Tybalt is hit with one last blow and is dead

BENVOLIO

Romeo, people are coming to see what happened!

You must go and hide somewhere!

ROMEO

I have such bad luck!

Exit ROMEO

Enter Person

Person

Which way did Tybalt run?

BENVOLIO

He was killed by Romeo.

Enter Prince, attended; MONTAGUE, CAPULET, their Wives, and others

PRINCE

Who began this fighting?

BENVOLIO

Tybalt, over there, killed your relative, Mercutio.

Then Romeo, out of anger, killed Tybalt.

LADY CAPULET

Tybalt was one of my best students!

Prince, I want you to take revenge on the Montague

school.

PRINCE

(at Benvolio) Where is Romeo now?

BENVOLIO

He ran away after Tybalt was dead.

LADY CAPULET

Prince, I demand that you punish Romeo for his actions!

PRINCE

Romeo killed Tybalt and Tybalt killed Mercutio,

So who will pay for Mercutio’s life?

MONTAGUE

Romeo should not have to be punished.

He and Mercutio were best friends and he was just taking justice

on Tybalt for what he did to Mercutio.

PRINCE

For what Romeo did, he must be expelled at once!

Because of your school’s rivalries, good people

have died. Romeo will have to leave the city.

Exeunt

SCENE 2

Juliet enters alone.

Juliet (while writing in journal)

I wish the sun would set so it would be night. I want Romeo to come to me and no one will know we are together. The best time for love is night. I want the night to come so I can lose my virginity to my love, Romeo. Night needs to come and so does Romeo who makes the night seem like day. Night please come and give me my Romeo. And when I die I want him to become stars and form a constellation of his face so that the night will be so beautiful everyone will forget about daytime. I am Romeo’s to own but he still hasn’t taken ownership of me. Today is so boring and I can’t wait for night.

Nurse enters.

Juliet

Oh, here comes Nurse. Nurse, what’s the news? Why do you look upset?

Nurse

He’s dead! He’s dead! This day is so awful! He’s been killed! He’s gone!

Juliet

How could God be so awful?

Nurse

It’s not God who is awful it’s Romeo! I would never have thought it would be Romeo.

Juliet

Why are you torturing me like this? This is like hell. Did Romeo kill himself? Please just tell me yes or no. Those words alone will decide if I’m happy or sad.

Nurse

I saw the gash and the corpse, bloody and pale. It was so disgusting I almost fainted.

Juliet

My heart is breaking. I will never allow myself to look at anything else again. I will never move and Romeo and I will lie together in a coffin.

Nurse

Tybalt was my best friend. I wish I had not been alive to see him die.

Juliet

What are you talking about? Did Romeo and Tybalt die? My dear cousin and my even dearer husband. If they are both dead, why would anyone else be alive?

Nurse

Tybalt is dead and Romeo has been expelled. Romeo killed Tybalt and he was expelled.

Juliet

Oh he’s disgusting! He is like a snake disguised as a flower. I hate him so much! He seemed like such a wonderful man and he has proved to be the opposite. He seemed honorable but he should be damned. I can’t believe something so evil could exist in something so stunning.

Nurse

Men are all liars and jerks. They’re all cheats and you can’t trust them. They have no faith or honesty. Romeo should be shameful.

Juliet

Romeo should not be shameful. He only deserves respect. Oh, I was so mean and awful to be angry with him.

Nurse

You’re saying this about the man who killed your cousin?

Juliet (talking to herself)

I shouldn’t say bad things about my own husband. But Romeo why did you kill my cousin? Well I guess because my cousin would have otherwise killed Romeo. I’m not going to cry at all. I would cry from happiness that Romeo is alive, but I should really cry because my cousin is dead. Romeo, the one who Tybalt wanted to kill, is alive. Tybalt, who wanted to kill Romeo, is dead. This is good news, right? Well then why should I cry? “Tybalt is dead and Romeo has been expelled.” Romeo’s expulsion is worse than ten thousand deaths of Tybalt. Telling me of Tybalt’s death is like saying one or both of my parents are dead. But to tell me that Romeo is expelled is like saying my mom, my dad, Tybalt, Romeo, and Juliet are dead. (now talking to Nurse) Nurse, where are my parents?

Nurse

They are mourning over Tybalt’s body. Do you want me to drive you there to join them?

Juliet

No thank you. I’ll stay here. Romeo has been expelled and I’m a virgin, I’m going to die a virgin and a widow.

Nurse

Just go to your room and I’ll find Romeo to comfort you. I know where he is. He’ll be here tonight. I’ll get him for you, I promise.

Juliet

(gives her a ring) Please find him and give him this ring. Tell him to come here and say his last goodbye.

Nurse exits.

Act III Scene III

Enters Friar

FRIAR
Romeo, come out of hiding!
You are safe here!

Romeo Enters

ROMEO
Friar, what did the Prince say my punishment was?

FRIAR
He said that you have to be expelled.
But don’t worry, there are other schools in this world!

ROMEO
He might as well have killed me.
If I can’t go to one of these schools, I can’t be with Juliet!

FRIAR
The prince just did you a favor!
Instead of sending you to jail, he spared you and just had you expelled.
You should be thankful!

ROMEO
But it’s not a favor!
He has separated me from my true love!
Without her, my life means nothing; I might as well be dead.

FRIAR
You’re crazy!
How can you not see that this is a blessing!

ROMEO
You are not young and in love like I am.
You do not see the real situation I’m in!

(knocking)

FRIAR
Romeo, go hide!
Someone might see you!

ROMEO
I don’t care if they see me!

FRIAR
Romeo, why are you so stupid?
If they see you, you will go to jail!
Hide!!

(knocking)

FRIAR
I’m coming!

(opens door)

NURSE
It’s about time you opened this, I’ve been standing here forever!

FRIAR
Sorry, Romeo wouldn’t move.

NURSE
(at Romeo) What are you sulking for?

ROMEO
I have been expelled!
My life is over!
I should just kill myself right now!

(takes dagger, tries to stab himself, but NURSE stops him)

FRIAR
Don’t act that suddenly!
Are you a man? Because from the looks of your tears, you look like a woman.
Why would you kill yourself when Juliet loves you so much?
Man-up and get over it!

NURSE
Exactly! Juliet is worried sick about you, and you would just end your life like that?

ROMEO
Juliet?
How is she?
Does she think I’m a murderer?

NURSE
No! She wants to see you!

ROMEO
I will have to come and be with her.
Nurse, will you tell her I will come?

NURSE
Yes, I will warn her of your arrival.
Oh! I almost forgot!
This is the ring Juliet wanted me to give you.

(NURSE gives ROMEO the ring, and then exits)

FRIAR
Don’t wait around Romeo!
Go to your wife!

ROMEO
Thank you for your advice Father.

(ROMEO exits)

FRIAR
Good luck good Romeo.

SCENE 4

Enter Lord and Lady Capulet and Paris.
Lord Capulet
Things have been so crazy around here with Tybalt’s death that we haven’t had time to convince Juliet to marry you. She loved Tybalt very much. It’s really late and she won’t come downstairs tonight.
Paris
This is a bad time for romance. Goodnight to you both and send my respects to Juliet.
Lady Capulet
I will. And tomorrow I’ll see what she thinks about your marriage, but for now I’m just going to leave her alone.
Lord Capulet
I don’t doubt that Juliet will do whatever I say. (to Lady Capulet) Visit her before you go to bed and tell her that Paris loves her. Also mention that on Friday, wait what day is it?
Paris
Wednesday.
Lord Capulet
Oh it’s Wednesday haha! Friday is too soon. Well then tell her that she will marry Paris on Saturday. (to Paris) Will you be ready? Is it ok to rush it? We won’t have a huge celebration, just a few friends. We don’t want people to think that we don’t care that Tybalt just died if we have a huge celebration. We’ll just invite a few friends, twelve or so. Is that ok with you?
Paris
That’s perfect! I can’t wait.
Lord Capulet
Great! Saturday it is then. (to Lady Capulet) Go see Juliet before you go to bed and tell her about the wedding. (to Paris) I’ll see you soon Paris. Goodnight. I’m off to bed.
Lady Capulet
Goodnight Paris.
Paris
Goodnight to you both.
Exeunt.

SCENE 5
Romeo and Juliet enter.
Juliet
Are you leaving now? There’s still a long time until the sun rises. Trust me you can stay a little longer.
Romeo
Look, the sun is rising. If I’m going to live, I’ll have to leave right now. If I stay, they’ll kill me.
Juliet
That’s not even daylight Romeo. You don’t have to go yet.
Romeo
Then I’ll be killed if that’s what you want. I’ll pretend it’s still night and that is the reflection of the moon. I really want to stay with you. Let me die if that is what you want. Let’s just talk. I’ll stay.
Juliet
You’re right Romeo it is morning. Get out of here. Hurry before they find you. The sun is getting higher. Leave before it gets too light.
Romeo
As it gets lighter, the worse things get for us.
Nurse enters.
Nurse
Juliet?
Juliet
Yeah?
Nurse
Your mom is coming! Be careful.
Nurse exits.
Juliet
Leave through the window.
Romeo
I’ll leave, but give me a kiss goodbye.
They kiss and Romeo climbs down.
Juliet
I hate that you have to leave. Text me every day. This feels like we’ll be apart forever. I can’t wait ‘til I can see you again.
Romeo
Goodbye Juliet. I’ll text you, I promise. And I’ll send you my love.
Juliet
Do you think we’ll ever see each other again?
Romeo
Of course we will. All this drama will give us something to tell each other later on.
Juliet
Goodbye my love.
Romeo
Goodbye Juliet. I love you.
Romeo exits.
Juliet
Everyone says you can’t make up your mind if you change your mind too much. I hope Romeo stays faithful. I hope he texts me soon.
Lady Capulet (from offstage)
Juliet? Are you awake?
Juliet
Is that my mom? Why is she up so early?
Lady Capulet enters.
Lady Capulet
Juliet, what are you doing?
Juliet
I don’t feel good Mom.
Lady Capulet
Stop crying about Tybalt. A little crying is ok but too much makes you look stupid.
Juliet
Let me keep crying, it was a terrible loss.
Lady Capulet
You can cry all you want but Tybalt won’t feel anything.
Juliet
For something as terrible as this I’ll have to cry forever.
Lady Capulet
Juliet, you’re not crying because he is dead as much as you are crying because the killer is still out there.
Juliet
Who’s the killer?
Lady Capulet
Romeo. That villainous Montague boy.
Juliet
(whispering to herself) He’s not a villain at all. (to Lady Capulet) No one could make my heart grieve the way he does.
Lady Capulet
We will get revenge. Quit crying. I’ll send someone to wherever Romeo is and he’ll poison his drink. Romeo will join Tybalt in death and then you will be satisfied.
Juliet
I’ll never be satisfied with Romeo until I see him dead. My poor cousin. If you find someone to deliver the poison, I’ll make it myself so he will die right when he drinks it. I hate how people say his name but don’t go after him. I want to take my love for my cousin and use it to hurt the man who killed him.
Lady Capulet
Make the poison and I’ll find someone to deliver it to him. But now I have good news.
Juliet
What’s the news Mom? Please tell me.
Lady Capulet
Your father loves you. He arranged a good day for you that you haven’t expected.
Juliet
Mom, what is it?
Lady Capulet
It’s Saturday morning at 9:30 at Saint Peter’s Church and you will be the happy bride of Paris.
Juliet
What?! I would never marry Paris. If I’m ever gonna marry someone it’s gonna be Romeo, not Paris.
Lady Capulet
Juliet, here comes your dad. Tell him about this and see what he thinks.
Lord Capulet and Nurse enter.
Lord Capulet
Juliet, are you still crying? You need to stop. You can’t cry forever. (to Lady Capulet) Did you tell her about our decision?
Lady Capulet
Yeah, I told her but she doesn’t want to marry him.
Lord Capulet
Wait, why? She doesn’t like him? He’s a great boy for her.
Juliet
Thanks for trying but I couldn’t be proud of him as a husband. I hate him and I can’t marry someone I hate.
Lord Capulet
Juliet, you spoiled little girl. How could you say something like that? I don’t care what you say. You make me sick. You are going to marry Paris at Saint Peter’s Church this Saturday even if I have to drag you there myself!
Lady Capulet
Are you crazy, don’t talk to her like that!
Juliet
Dad, would you please just listen to me for once.
Lord Capulet
Juliet shut up! Don’t talk back to me. You’ll do as I say or never look me in the eye again. I’m not going to deal with your rude behavior. (Juliet stands up.) Juliet, I could slap you right now! You disgust me.
Nurse
Chill out! You’re being so mean to her. She’s your daughter!
Lord Capulet
Why should I? Just shut up and go home!
Nurse
I’m just saying. I mean I didn’t say anything wrong.
Lord Capulet
Oh my God.
Nurse
Am I not allowed to talk?
Lord Capulet
Just shut up, ok? I don’t want to hear it.
Lady Capulet
Please will you calm down?
Lord Capulet
Dammit, I’ve spent God knows how long trying to find a suitable person for Juliet to marry and now I have. He comes from a wealthy family, he’s handsome, and he has a great education. He sounds like a pretty good man to me. Any girl would be lucky to have him. If you don’t want to marry him that’s perfectly fine but you are no longer aloud to live in my house. Just think about it, Juliet. You can marry him on Saturday or you can live on the streets and starve. This I promise Juliet. Think about what I’ve said. I don’t go back on my promises.
Lord Capulet exits.
Juliet
Mom, please don’t let him kick me out. I really don’t want to marry that stupid guy.
Lady Capulet
Do whatever you want Juliet; I’m done with you.
Lady Capulet exits.
Juliet
(To Nurse) Please give me some advice. I have no clue what I should do. This sucks. Please help me.
Nurse
So here’s what I have to say: Romeo is expelled and who knows if you’re ever gonna see him again. Your dad found you an awesome guy to marry and I think you should marry him. Seriously Juliet, he’s so hot. Romeo is nothing compared to Paris. I think you should forget about Romeo and just marry Paris. Even if you don’t want to marry him, your marriage with Romeo is over and he won’t even be around anymore for you to be together.
Juliet
Is that the truth? That’s what you really think?
Nurse
Of course it is Juliet.
Juliet
Hey will you go tell my mom that I feel terrible for how I treated my dad and that I’m going to Friar Lawrence’s cell to confess and be forgiven?
Nurse
Yeah, I will.
Nurse exits.
Juliet
Ugh! That was so rude of her to tell me to just forget about Romeo like that. She used to like Romeo and now she’s saying horrible things about him. I’m never going to tell her anything ever again. I’m gonna go talk to Friar Lawrence. If nothing works out I’ll always have the power to take my own life.
Juliet exits.
